Brydges

The Brydges claimed to be descended from the Princes of Wales and for centuries, they owned numerous estates in Bosbury, Bridge Sollers, Staunton, Tibberton, Old Colwall, Ledbury, Ross and Priors Court among others.

William Brydges (1584-1627) of Upleadon in the parish of Bosbury married Margaret Vaughan (1575-1655). Four of their five sons lived to manhood. The eldest, William Brydges (1601-1668) of Tibberton Court served as High Sheriff for Herefordshire in 1653. The second son, John Brydges (1604-1669) of Priors Court married Joyce Bright, the daughter of Henry Bright of Worcester.

John’s three daughters, Margaret, Joyce and Dorothy, became his heirs. Margaret married Thomas Carpenter of Lincoln’s Inn, barrister-at-law. Their daughter Theodosia Carpenter eloped with Lemuel Kingdon. Salt & Silk tells how they were the subjects of much malicious gossip in London.

Joyce married Herbert Aubrey II Esq. of Clehonger and Dorothy became the wife of Walter Thomas Esq. of Swansea.
