Vaux
Morgan Aubrey married Joan Vaux who came from a family of rich merchants. Her father, Robert Vaux, was from Cumberland while her brother, John Vaux, became a Citizen of London (as did Morgan) and a member of the Merchant Taylors’ Guild, which ranked sixth in the order of the ‘Great Twelve’ Guilds. In 1598, John was elected Warden.
Joan’s nephew Robert Vaux, son of the Merchant Taylor, was also a merchant. Alice Banister, his wife similarly came from a family of merchants and he married his daughters, Alice and Elizabeth, to merchants.
In 1606 Robert was rich enough to buy the 16 room manor house of Whipsnade in Bedfordshire, including extensive lands, valuable rents and timber, for £1,500.
Whipsnade remained in the Vaux family for the next two centuries.
Today, Whipsnade is one of the largest wild animal parks in Europe and is home to over two thousand animals.
