Rudhall
The Rudhall family could trace their ancestry back to Roger Rudhale of Rudhall in the time of Richard II. Over the generations, a prolific number of descendants ensured a network of important connections to other Herefordshire families.
William Rudhall, Sergeant at Law, a senior barrister, died in 1609. He and his wife Margaret, daughter of Sir James Croft of Croft Castle produced four sons and seven daughters. Morgan Aubrey’s son Sir Samuel Aubrey married Joyce Rudhall, one of the daughters, thus consolidating the Aubreys of Clehonger into the network of influential Herefordshire families.
All four of William’s sons died childless, and most of the Rudhall estates eventually came to the children of the eldest daughter Frances, the wife of Herbert Westfaling whose father, also Herbert, was Bishop of Hereford.
His stone effigy can be seen in Hereford Cathedral.
